Road accessibility and agricultural extension services in Malawi

Abstract Background In recognition of the potential importance road access in provision and request for agricultural extension services, this study investigates whether to what extent paved roads would influence farmers’ using a nationally representative sample households communities Malawi. Our proposes an measure that reflects diversity topics service providers available village where farmers resided, which commonly is captured binary fashion “contact” with agents. Results We find non-linear relationship between showing that, on average, decreased by 14.1 percent as farmer’s residence was one log distance away from nearest road. Women had considerably lower scores 24.3 than men, indicating prevalence country’s deeply rooted cultural gender barriers. Furthermore, serving lead farmers, human capital economic characteristics, resources village—such number agents demonstration farm trials—are identified factors having sizable contribution determining access. Conclusion findings will provide empirical evidence answers questions raised past studies concerning among roads, extension, productivity, other outcomes. Also, it inform future research about development nexus.
